The title of this composition, Bloom, is partly an homage to the magnificent spring 2019 “superbloom” of wildflowers in the Anza-Borrego Desert in Southern California, which I visited shortly before starting to write the piece. Yet it also refers to a question I often asked myself as I worked, and which eventually gave rise to the piece’s final form: what conditions does a musical idea need to fully establish its identity… to, in other words, metaphorically come into bloom? Bloom was composed with gratitude for the Flux Quartet and the Santa Fe Chamber Music Festival, who commissioned the work and gave its premiere performance in 2019.
